Leisureworld Employees and Residents Join Together to Support People Affected by Alzheimer's

MARKHAM, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 19, 2013) - Leisureworld Senior Care Corporation (TSX:LW) employees, residents and their families came together on January 26 to promote awareness and to help raise much needed funds for Alzheimer research and programs. It was easy to spot the Leisureworld team as they walked together in brightly coloured orange t-shirts, some rolling in wheelchairs, at the Walk for Memories event held in downtown Toronto's Allen Lambert Galleria at Brookfield Place.

In total, Leisureworld donated $15,000 to the Alzheimer Society's local chapters which included a corporate monetary and in-kind donation, funds raised at the Toronto walk plus funds raised by other Leisureworld homes who participated in walks in their respective communities.

For Raheem Hirji, Leisureworld's director of financial planning and analysis, one of the faces of Alzheimer's is his grandmother who is living with the disease. This inspired Hirji to join the Toronto walk for the first time this year and organize a team at Leisureworld's corporate office to participate and raise funds. Hirji says the response was phenomenal with families, friends and coworkers giving donations.

"I feel that if more people are aware, then they get engaged, they contribute more to the cause and we can work faster towards finding a cure for it," said Hirji.

Brian Hurley, a resident at Leisureworld Lawrence, also took part in the Toronto walk and enjoyed it tremendously.

"Walk for Memories serves a worthwhile purpose in raising awareness of the challenges people face living with Alzheimer's and dementia. It awakens people to the problem," noted Hurley.

To Erica Mugan, program manager at Leisureworld Ellesmere, one of the most moving sights at the walk was the photos participants wore on their t-shirts of loved ones lost or living with Alzheimer's or related dementia. They are among the people that Leisureworld Ellesmere, Lesiureworld Lawrence and the organization's corporate office were supporting at the walk.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and will affect 1.4 million Canadians by 2031.
